Moran led the nation in field goal accuracy during the 1949-50 season as a junior and became the team's top rebounder by his senior year. James finished with 769 points in three seasons, which still ranks in the top 65 on the all-time scoring list.

Moran's jersey was retired following the 1951 season. He is one of nine Purple Eagles to have his jersey retired. Moran was inducted into the Niagara University Athletics Hall of Fame in 1971
