Dwyer graduated from Niagara University in 1965 and has remained loyal to the Purple Eagles ever since, most notably giving generous donations to the university in 1998 and beyond to expand the on-campus ice arena, now known as Dwyer Arena, and further develop the Niagara hockey programs. Dwyer, a successful businessman prior to his retirement from Morgan Stanley Dean Witter in 1999, was a member of the University Board of Trustees from 1991 through 2010, serving as chairman from 2002-2010 and earning Chairman Emeritus in 2010. Dwyer has received multiple awards from the university, including the Caritas Medal (2015), Alumni Award (2007), Founders Award (2005), and an Honorary Doctorate of Commercial Science (1990), while also receiving the Alumni Award (1991), and being named Affiliates of the Congregation of the Mission (2000) alongside his wife Connie, who is the founder and president of the Connie Dwyer Cancer Center Foundation.
