HAMDEN, Conn. — Niagara put three entries into the quarterfinals of the Metro Masters Tournament, but all three lost Saturday, ending the Purple Eagles' run in the singles and doubles brackets.
Isabel Garcia Torra came closest to a semifinal berth. She lost to Caitlin Flower in a deciding tiebreaker. The women's doubles team of Valeria Mora Alvarez and Larisa Kotok and the men's doubles team of Logan Wong and Jose Maria Garcia Uribe also reached the final eight before falling.
Women's singles. Garcia Torra opened Friday with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Miranda Ericson in the round of 16. In Saturday's quarterfinal, she took the first set 6-2 against Flower, but Flower won the second set 6-3 and the 10-point tiebreaker 10-7 to take the match.
Maria Melo also reached the round of 16, but lost to Amelie Gonzalez. Gonzalez won 7-5, 1-6, 10-8, in a match that went to a tiebreaker after Melo forced a third set with a 6-1 second set.
Women's doubles. Garcia Torra and Melo lost their round-of-16 match Friday afternoon, 6-2, to Mount St. Mary's Eirini Tsakiri and Margherita Trolese.
Mora and Kotok won their round-of-16 match Friday evening, 6-2 over Saanvi Raniga and Chinonso Okpara. They lost the quarterfinal Saturday at noon, 6-3, to Maria Gell and Victoria Mandma.
Men's singles. Garcia played three matches Friday. He started with a 6-1, 7-6 (10-8) win over Darren Huang in the round of 32. In the round of 16, he lost 6-2, 6-4 to Alejandro Abella Fernandez.
Damian Janiszewski also reached the round of 16, where he lost 6-4, 6-3 to Vishal Prakash.
Men's doubles. Wong and Garcia Uribe gave Niagara its biggest doubles win of the tournament Friday evening. They beat fourth-seeded Alexi Roy and Nikolaos Fotios Makris of Mount St. Mary's 7-6 (8-6) in the round of 16. Saturday afternoon, they lost the quarterfinal 6-4 to Siena's Emilio Zavala Salinas and Santiago Trujillo Garcia.
Aryav Bhawan and Janiszewski lost their round-of-32 match Friday afternoon, 6-4, to Quinnipiac's Alessandro Sciacca and Carl Sjoholm.
