Niagara University, NY — Niagara won four of six singles matches Saturday to hold off Sacred Heart 4-3 in women's tennis on Saturday night.
Sacred Heart won the doubles point, taking two of three matches. Ola Irla-Bartyzel and Olivia Zuba gave the Pioneers the early lead with a 6-3 victory over Larisa Kotok and Gabriela Melo at No. 1 doubles. Savita Bagirathan and Brooke Tuffs closed out the point with a 6-2 win over Isabel Garcia and Julia Clarke-Louie at No. 3. The No. 2 match between Ava Nelson and Malena del Olmo against Saloni Tamang and Valeria Mora ended tied at 4-4 and was not completed.
Niagara responded by winning four singles matches to claim the overall result. Melo was the Purple Eagles' standout, rallying past Nelson 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 2. Tamang won by retirement at No. 4 over Zuba, who did not complete the match. Mora cruised past Kiah James 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5, and Clarke-Louie battled past del Olmo 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in a competitive three-setter at No. 6.
Sacred Heart's wins came at Nos. 1 and 3. Irla-Bartyzel defeated Garcia 6-1, 6-3 at the top spot, and Bagirathan outlasted Kotok 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3.
