Box Score EMMITSBURG, Md. — Mount St. Mary's men's tennis team narrowly defeated Niagara 4-3 on Saturday, while the Niagara women earned a decisive 4-1 victory over the Mountaineers in a conference doubleheader.
The Mount men secured the crucial doubles point with a clean sweep across all three positions. The duo of Akarsh Gaonkar and Alexi Roy claimed a tight 7-6 victory at No. 1 doubles, while their teammates won convincingly at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots.
In singles play, Niagara's Bedard earned a victory at the top position, but Roy and Filippos Zachiotis gave Mount St. Mary's a commanding lead with straight-set wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles respectively. The Purple Eagles fought back with Makkar and Garcia earning three-set victories, but Ryan Wagner's three-set win at No. 6 clinched the match for the Mountaineers.
The Niagara women reversed their fortunes after dropping the doubles point. Mount St. Mary's captured two of three doubles matches with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions.
However, the Purple Eagles dominated singles action, winning all four completed matches in straight sets. Margaret Melo set the tone with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles, while Garcia delivered a perfect 6-0, 6-0 performance at the No. 2 spot. Kotok and Tammand completed the sweep with equally impressive straight-set victories.
