Box Score UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Niagara women's tennis team fell 4-0 to Penn State in non-conference action Saturday at the Indoor Tennis Center, despite some bright spots in doubles play.
Niagara (1-6) showed early promise at No. 1 doubles, where
Isabel Garcia and
Gabriela Melo went toe-to-toe with Penn State's 77th-ranked pair of Olivia Dorner and Maiko Uchijima. Their match was tied 4-3 when play was suspended after Penn State clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win by Jordina Cegarra and Patricia Grigoras over
Mercedes Velasco and
Saloni Tamang, followed by a tight 7-5 victory from Yvonne Zuffova and Jelena Vico against
Valeria Mora and
Larisa Kotok.
In singles, Kotok worked to find her footing at the No. 3 position but ultimately fell 6-1, 6-1 to Grigoras in one of the first completed matches. Tamang then dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Vico at No. 4, before Melo concluded the team scoring with a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Uchijima at No. 2.
Garcia had her No. 1 singles match against Dorner halted at 6-1, 5-2, while Velasco and Mora also had their matches go unfinished at the No. 5 and 6 positions once the team result was decided.
