Purple & White Fall to Duquesne

WEXFORD, Pa. — The Niagara University women's tennis team showed resilience but ultimately fell 4-3 to Duquesne University in a closely contested dual match on Sunday at the Oxford Athletic Club.

The Dukes clinched the doubles point by winning two of three matches. While Niagara's Valeria Mora and Larisa Kotok dominated their No. 2 match 6-2, Duquesne secured victories at No. 1 and No. 3 positions to take the early 1-0 lead.

Gabriela Melo provided a highlight for Niagara in singles play, staging an impressive comeback to defeat Mila Badics 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 at the No. 1 position. The Purple Eagles (2-9) also received strong performances from Kotok at No. 4 singles, where she edged Sofia Linares Perez in a tight two-set match 7-6, 7-6.

Mora secured Niagara's third singles point with a three-set victory at No. 6, rallying from a first-set deficit to defeat Sofia Serrano 2-6, 6-2, 4-3 (retired).

The Dukes claimed the team victory with wins at No. 2 singles where Kaya Rand defeated Isabel Garcia in straight sets, No. 3 singles where Taisia Yakunina swept Mercedes Velasco, and No. 5 singles where D. Arinez Guilarte outlasted Saloni Tamang in three sets.
