Box Score WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. — Niagara women's tennis emerged with a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Oakland on Friday afternoon, overcoming an early doubles deficit with strong singles play.
The Purple Eagles dropped the doubles point, with Oakland capturing wins at No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Hammond and
Piechowicz defeated
Isabel Garcia and
Gabriela Melo 6-3 at first doubles, while
Jarvinen and Ward secured a 6-1 victory at second doubles. Niagara's third doubles team of
Valeria Mora and
Larisa Kotok earned a 6-2 win.
The Purple Eagles showed their resilience in singles, winning four of six matches to claim the overall victory. Garcia battled through a tight contest at No. 2 singles, outlasting Hammond 7-5, 7-6(5).
Kotok delivered in a crucial three-set match at No. 4 singles, persevering for a 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-3 win over
Piechowicz.
Saloni Tamang provided a straight-sets victory at No. 5 singles, defeating Montreuil 6-3, 7-5, while Mora secured the decisive fourth point with a gutsy three-set win at No. 6 singles, topping Hultqvist 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-2.
Oakland's points came from
Jarvinen at No. 1 singles, where she rallied past Melo 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, and Ward at No. 3 singles with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over
Mercedes Velasco.
