Bowling Green, OH—The Niagara women's tennis team opened their 2023 fall season as they traveled to Bowling Green to take part in the Bowling Green "Dynamic Duo" Fall Invitational.
The weekend tournament features 64 athletes with 32 teams competing. Each round consists of a best two of three to determine which team will advance. The teams will play one doubles match which is followed by each player playing a singles match.
Jaida Borg and Elena Mayet teamed up and advanced to the round of 16. In the doubles match they took an 8-3 win over a duo from Cedarville. Needing just one win to advance, Mayet won her first two sets 6-4 and 6-4 to take the win. On Saturday, they will face a team from Toledo who drew an opening round bye.
Coral Rodriguez and freshman Larisa Kotok teamed up as they took on a pair from Bowling Green. In the first doubles match, the teams were forced to a tie breaker set that went in favor of Bowling Green 12-10. In her first collegiate singles match, Kotok won in a tiebreaker set to earn her first win. She fell in the first set 6-1 before responding with a 6-4 second set win. In the third set, Kotok won 10-4 to take the win. Rodriguez fell in her first set of singles 6-1 and could not force a third set after falling in the second set 6-4.
Mercedes Velasco and Enrica Favaron were paired up and fell 3-0 in their opening match. In the opening doubles match they fell 8-3 to a team from Bowling Green. In her singles match Velasco, 6-3, 6-1. Favaron fell in her singles match as well, 6-1, 7-5. In their consolation match, the duo fell in doubles to a pair from Toledo.
The Purple Eagles will be back in action on Saturday.
