Women’s Tennis Faces Two-Time Defending Champs In MAAC Semis

Awards Show – Friday, April 29 at 6 P.M.

The Niagara University women's tennis team will face No. 1 seed Quinnipiac in the 2016 MAAC Tournament Semfinals on Saturday, April 30 at 2 p.m. from the Mercer County Park Tennis Center in West Windsor, N.J.

First Serve
  • Niagara enters the MAAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed with a 5-2 record. The Purple Eagles had the same conference record as Marist and Siena.
  • The Purple Eagles are one of the youngest teams in the country with five freshmen and two sophomores.
  • Five Purple Eagles have double-digit wins in overall singles – Shannon Wong (13), Haley Hollins (12), Stella Peisakhova (11), Sydnee Wheeler (10) and Sharlee Deshmukh (10).
  • Peisakhova (No. 1), Hollins (No. 2), Wheeler (No. 3) and Deshmukh (No. 5) all went 5-2 in conference singles play.
  • The doubles team of Wheeler and Hollins won a team-high seven matches and went 4-3 in conference matches.
  • Wong (March 30) and Peisakhova (April 13) were each named MAAC Tennis Player of the Week once this season.

Across The Net: No. 1 Quinnipiac Bobcats
  • Quinnipiac enters the MAAC Tournament with a 13-10 overall record and a 7-0 conference mark.
  • The Bobcats have won seven of their last eight, including five straight matches.
  • Four players have won at least 13 singles matches, led by Rachel Horton's 19 overall wins. Quinnipiac's No. 1 Sophia Dzulynsky and teammate Profon Lohaphaisan each went 7-0 in conference matches, while Horton and Jennifer Lu went 6-1.
  • In doubles, Quinnipiac went 45-21 in dual matches including a 19-2 record in MAAC play.
  • NU has lost all three meetings with Quinnipiac since the Bobcats joined the MAAC at the start of the 2013-14 season.  
  • The Purple Eagles lost to Quinnipiac in the 2015 MAAC Championship Final.

  • NU has qualified for the four-team conference tournament for the fourth straight season.
  • Niagara has won the MAAC Tournament twice (2003 & 2005) in program history.
  • NU is seeking consecutive appearances in the MAAC Final for the first time since making three straight trips to the championship match from 2003-05.
