WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. – The Niagara University Purple Eagles opened conference action with a dominating, 6-1, win over the Fairfield Stags on Saturday.
Niagara (5-8, 1-0 MAAC) won seven of the nine matches played en route to their third straight win against Fairfield (1-11, 1-1 MAAC).
The Purple Eagles rallied to take the doubles point. After falling in No. 1 doubles, the no. 2 team of
Haley Hollins and
Sydnee Wheeler eased past Fairfield's Courtney Connors and Meghan Zimmer, 6-1, to tie the match. In three doubles,
Sharlee Deshmukh and Leann Richert broke the serve of Karen McKeough and Cecilia Parla to win 6-4 to earn the point.
In singles play, Hollins won her sixth match of the spring with a 6-0, 6-0 win in two singles and her doubles partner, Wheeler, defeated Zimmer, 6-3, 6-2, in No. 3 singles as NU led the match, 3-0. Peisakhova clinched the match for the Purple Eagles with a straight win in No. 1 singles.
Shannon Wong improved to a team-best 7-5 record in the spring with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Gabriella Campos in No. 4 singles. Deshmukh topped Connors in straight sets in five singles.
The Purple Eagles continue their MAAC weekend homestand versus Siena on Sunday at 1 p.m.
