LATHAM, N.Y. – The Niagara women's tennis program clinched a spot in the 2015 MAAC Tournament with a 4-3 victory over the Siena Saints after midnight.
The Purple Eagles (8-7, 5-1 MAAC) won the crucial doubles point and picked up wins from 4 to 6 singles to pull out the victory.
A pair of doubles teams extended win streaks to three matches. The No. 2 pair of
Stella Peisakhova and
Brooke Briseno edged Rina Sakai and Julia Dunbar, 9-8 (5), and the No. 3 tandem of
Iva Celan and
Ashley Ta defeated Allysa Singh and Cassandra Braz, 8-5.
Three of the six singles matches went three sets with Niagara winning two of them. The Purple Eagles dropped matches at one, two and three singles; however, picked up wins in four, five and six singles. Peisakhova won her fourth straight match by downing Fukamachi, 3-6, 6-1, 10-8, in the four spot.
Maria Ortiz won in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5, in five singles, and Briseno outlasted Dunbar, 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 for her sixth straight win.
Niagara continues it road trip on Saturday against Fairfield.
