HAMDEN, Conn. – The Niagara women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to conference-leading Quinnipiac on Saturday.
Paulina Velasquez and
Maria Ortiz each picked up wins for the Purple Eagles (10-7, 5-2 MAAC) in singles to extend their own respective winning streaks. Velasquez, a freshman from Queens, N.Y., improved her team-best record to 18-6 while remaining unbeaten in MAAC play at 5-0 with a 6-4, 6-0 win in No. 3 singles for her ninth straight win. Ortiz won her fifth straight match after rallying from a set down to beat Sydney Young, 0-6, 6-4, 10-8, in the four spot.
NU, however, was unable to find success elsewhere. After dropping the doubles point to the Bobcats (9-10, 6-0 MAAC), the home team won three of the next four singles matches to clinch.
The setback was the first time the Purple Eagles have lost consecutive regular season conference matches since March 2012 and is the first time NU has dropped consecutive matches since falling to Stetson and Michigan State in early March.
NU will play its final road match of the season against Manhattan on Sunday at 1 p.m.
