ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The Niagara women’s tennis team rolled to a 6-1 victory over the St. Bonaventure Bonnies on Monday.
The top two doubles teams each stretched their winning streaks to five matches. In No. 1 doubles,
Hilary Hansen and
Maria Ortiz defeated Fatya Amiri and Marissa Brossard, 8-5, while
Iva Celan and
Sarah Hellstern cruised to an 8-2 win in No. 2 doubles.
Niagara (12-5) dominated in singles, winning four of the five matches played. Hansen won her 13th match of the season to tie Hellstern for team-high honors. Ortiz won in straight sets to pick up her fourth consecutive win.
Ashley Ta won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, over Kathryn Kvas in No. 3 singles for her third straight win. Celan blanked Jillian Hammell in five singles to extend her winning streak to seven matches.
The Purple Eagles, who have won eight of their last nine matches, registered their largest win in the series since defeating St. Bonaventure (3-15) 6-1 in April 2006. Niagara’s five-match winning streak is the program’s longest since April 2005 (six straight).
First place NU will continue its road trip this weekend beginning on Saturday against Fairfield in a battle of unbeaten teams in MAAC play.
