LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Niagara women’s tennis team displayed a dominant performance en route to rolling Rider, 7-0, on Saturday.

The victory keeps Niagara (6-12, 2-4 MAAC) in the hunt to qualify for the four-team MAAC Tournament held from April 28-29 at the Mercer County Park in West Windsor, N.J.

“I am happy with the way both teams approached today’s matches,” head coach Anthony Nguyen said about the men’s and women’s teams.

The Purple Eagles swept all three double matches, which included the first doubles win by Rachel Zilka and Viki Sardellitti, 8-5, in No. 3 doubles.  NU put in an efficient display in singles action while losing only two games. Hilary Hansen, Ashley Ta and Iva Celan swept their opponents with losing a game, and Jenna McCune picked up her first singles win this spring with a 6-0, 6-0 win in No. 6 singles. Maria Ortiz and Sardellitti won their matches, 6-1, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1, respectively. Ortiz extended her win streak to seven matches. 

“The women did a good job of taking care of business and we now turn our focus towards Manhattan tomorrow,” Nguyen said.

Niagara will play at Manhattan (5-10, 2-3 MAAC) on Sunday and needs a win to stay in playoff contention.
