Women’s Swimming & Diving Win First of Year, Baxter Breaks School Record

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – A trio of double-winners for the Niagara women's swimming and diving teams propelled the team to its first win of the season when it beat Waterloo, 105-86.  The men dropped a 109-94 decision to the Warriors. 

“The team did an excellent job of stepping up and racing today,” said head coach Ben Nigro.  “The team had 26 season best times today.  We won 12 of the 22 events and everyone who participated contributed to the score.” 

Junior Aubrey Kettrick won the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.17) and the 100-yard freestyle (54.07).  Junior Lindsey Jackson earned top honors in the 200-yard IM, clocking in at 2:14.34 while finishing first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:13.98.  Junior Julia Bulmahn finished first in the 200-yard backstroke and was the lead-leg in the 200-yard medley relay team of sophomore Erica Crane, junior Renee Parsons and sophomore Chelsea O'Laughlin that placed first with a time of 1:55.42. 

Niagara also got points from sophomore Emily Kisloski who finished second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.61). 

Joining the women in the double-win category were several Purple Eagle men.   Freshman Shane Baxter broke another NU record, beating the previous time of 1:56.11 for the 200-yard backstroke, clocking in at 1:52.86.  The previous record was set in 2004 by Kevin Klein.   Baxter also notched a victory in the 200-yard IM (1:56.74).

Fellow freshman Corban Bothell won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:52.38 and the 1000-yard freestyle (10:53.58).  Baxter and Bothell, along with teammates sophomore Alex Siuda and junior Brian Sawma earned first place in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:39.97. 

Freshman Tyler McCrobie earned his first victory as a Purple Eagle when he took the 50-yard freestyle with a winning time of 23.05.   
 
Niagara is back in action on Dec. 2, when they compete in day one of the Zippy Invitational, hosted by Akron.
