ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Niagara women’s tennis team (5-12) defeated the Oakland Golden Grizzlies (0-7), 4-3, in dramatic fashion on Monday for its third-straight win.

Niagara’s fifth and sixth ranked singles players came away with victories to ensure the win for the Purple Eagles.  

The Purple Eagles took the double point with wins by the No. 1 tandem of Hilary Hansen and Alyssa Lucas over Oakland’s Karen Karoub and Caitlin Young, 8-3, and the No. 3 team of Julia Gray and Emma Cunnington topped Oakland’s Amanda Pettey and Kristin Karoub, 8-3.

In singles play, NU’s number one Hansen edged Young, 6-4 and 6-3. However, the Purple Eagles’ number two, three and four players all fell in straight sets.

In the No. 5 singles, Brittany Walters defeated Pettey, 7-6, 6-4, for her third-straight win; all in straight sets. While Julia Gray cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over the Golden Grizzlies’ number sixth Kristin Karoub for the pivotal fourth victory.

Niagara continues its Michigan road trip with a match at Wayne State on Tuesday.
