WEST POINT, N.Y., - The Niagara women's tennis team put in a strong effort at the West Point Invitational this weekend, as sophomore Hilary Hansen (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) led the way as she went 1-1 in impressive fashion.

In the first singles flight, Hansen defeated Jasleen Sandhu of Siena 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the round of 16. Hansen put in a great effort against top seeded Annie Houghton of Army, with Hansen losing a tough match 6-4, 6-4.

In the second singles flight, Alyssa Lucas (Clarkston, Mich.) defeated NJIT's Nina Mayevska 4-6, 6-4, (10-7) to advance to the round of 16. Lucas played well, but was ousted in the next round by Middlebury's Brittney Faber.

The doubles team of Emma Cunnington (Victoria, B.C.) and Julia Gray (Halifax, Nova Scotia) played extremely well. Cunnington and Gray defeated Alexandra Guynn and Lauren Kelly of Middlebury 8-3. The doubles team was later defeated in the semifinal round by Tanisha Hodgson and Jocelyn Providence of UMass 8-0.

The Purple Eagles will return to the court on Friday, October 2 as a part of the Niagara Falls Classic.
