FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Niagara tennis teams suffered defeats by the hands of the Sacred Heart Pioneers on Sunday afternoon. The men’s tennis was beat 5-2 and the women’s team 6-1.

The men’s team (4-12) won the doubles point and one single match on the day. Marc Dickinson (Saskatoon, Sask.) and Nick Bolea (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) won their match 8-3, while Joe Zelic (Niagara Falls, Ont.) and David Lemieux-Sarrasin (Lorraine, Que.) won their respective match 8-3.

Bolea was the lone Purple Eagle to win his single match.

“I’m proud of our doubles partners,” men’s coach Anthony Nguyen said. “I believe that was our best performance in doubles. However, overall I am disappointed with the team’s effort.”

The women’s tennis team (9-10) may have been emotionally drained and physically fatigue for its morning match against the Pioneers. Niagara defeated Fairfield late last night to win the MAAC regular season title.

“I think we came out flat,” women’s head coach Paul Calkins said. “We had a late night (match against Fairfield) and it was an emotional win over Fairfield.”

Niagara won one doubles match, but did not pick up the point. Niagara also lost five-straight single matches until Brittany Walters (Buffalo, N.Y.) won 63 63 over Delaney Downing.

Both teams will finish their regular seasons with a match against St. Bonaventure; the women’s on April 7 and the men’s on April 14.
