NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. – The Niagara tennis teams had opposite fortune this afternoon against the Marist Red Foxes. The women’s team defeated the Red Foxes 6-1, but the men’s team suffered a 7-0 setback.

“I’m proud of the way we conducted ourselves (today),” women’s head coach Paul Calkins said. “We did really well in singles play and took care of business in doubles. We look forward to next week where we will play for the number one seed at Fairfield.”

Niagara (8-9, 5-0 MAAC) won the double point from an 8-5 win by Vanja Lakic (Waterloo, Ont.)/Hilary Hansen (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) and an 8-3 by win Brittany Walters (Buffalo, N.Y.)/Victoria Tiso (Clarence, N.Y.).

The Purple Eagles would steamroll through the single matches. Niagara won five-straight matches until Emma Cunnington (Victoria, B.C.) was knocked off in the last single match of the day.

The Niagara men’s team (4-10, 3-2 MAAC) was on the wrong side of a 7-0 defeat by the Red Foxes.

“The guys fought hard, but Marist was too tough today,” men’s head coach Anthony Nguyen said. “We will continue to work hard this week (in practice) and get ready for the end of the year.”

Both Niagara teams travel to Fairfield next weekend. The women’s team will play the Stags for the MAAC regular season title on Saturday, April 4.
