JERSEY CITY, N.J. – In its first MAAC contest of the season, the Niagara women’s tennis team cruised to a 7-0 victory over the Saint Peter’s Peahens on Saturday afternoon. The Purple Eagles didn’t drop a single set on the day.
“We played much better (today) and this was the game we were looking for,” head coach Paul Calkins said. “Each week we are working towards to our goal (MAAC champions).”
Senior Vanja Lakic (Waterloo, Ont.) and sophomore Brittany Walters (Buffalo, N.Y.) set the tone with an 80 doubles win over Saint Peter’s Andrea Collomb and Kristen Realista. Double partners Hilary Hansen (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) and Alyssa Lucas (Clarkston, Mich.) and Raquel Solis (Puebla, Mexico) and Emma Cunnington (Victoria, B.C.) won their matches, 85 and 83, respectively.
In singles action, NU did not slip up as the Purple Eagles swept their matches. The closet match was between Hansen and SPC’s Kristen Realista; Hansen won the first set 76 after winning the tie breaker 74, then won 61 in the second set.
Niagara is back on the court tomorrow afternoon at Manhattan.
