Women's Tennis Defeated By Binghamton

Vanja Lakic

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Niagara women’s tennis team finished its first weekend of action in 2009 with a competitive 6-1 defeat to the Binghamton Bears. Freshman Alyssa Lucas (Clarkston, Mich.) won a three-set thriller for the Purple Eagles’ only win of the day.

The Niagara doubles team played tough albeit in a losing effort. The first two doubles matches were close, but the most competitive was the match between Vanja Lakic (Waterloo, Ont.) and Brittany Walters (Buffalo, N.Y.) versus Binghamton’s Danyelle Shapiro and Lauren Bates. The Bears won 8-4.

The Purple Eagles lone win came in the Lucas match. After dropping the first set to Marina Bykovskaye, the freshman won the second set in a tie breaker and won a marathon third set, 13-11.

Niagara will compete in the Cornell Winter Invitational next weekend starting on Jan. 30.
