FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Niagara University women’s tennis team (11-11) had its season come to an end Sunday, losing 4-0 to top-seeded Marist College in the finals of the 25th Annual Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Championship at the United States Tennis Association Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
The Red Foxes took a 1-0 lead in the match, winning two of the three doubles matches. Senior Jennifer Cremieux (Ajax, Ont.) and freshman Molly Mathews (Pittsburgh, Pa.) lost 8-1 to Christine Ong and Cassie Strange at No. 1. Junior Shella Dargout (Rochester, N.Y.) and sophomore Vanja Lakic (Waterloo, Ont.) fell, 8-1 at No. 2 to Alexa Strange and Erin Godly. The senior duo of Julianne Prokopich (Loretto, Ont.) and Jacquelyn Cary (Selkirk, N.Y.) defeated Mirelva Colon and Emily Zampello, 8-6 at No. 3.
In singles, Ong beat Lakic 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1, Godly downed Prokopich 6-1, 6-3, and Alexa Strange defeated Dargout, 6-2, 6-0.
Cremieux’s, Mathews’ and Cary’s matches were all unfinished.
