FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – Senior Julianne Prokopich’s 12th singles win of the season clinched the Niagara University women’s tennis team’s (13-10) berth in the 25th Annual Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title match Sunday after it defeat Siena College, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at the United States Tennis Association Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. The second-seeded Purple Eagles, who are in their fourth MAAC final, meet defending league champion and top-seeded Marist College at 11 a.m.
With the match tied at 3-3, the Loretto, Ont., native defeated Karina Davis, 7-6 (7), 6-3 at No. 3 singles to clinch the match and improve to 9-7 in the third singles spot.
"The team is excited, but all agree that the win is short-lived today and that they have the night to prepare for a job tomorrow," Niagara head coach Paul Calkins said. "The last time we played Marist, it was our third match in three days and they (Red Foxes) haven’t played that many in consecutive days. We are confident in that this match is a doable thing."
Niagara took a 1-0 lead in the match, winning two of the three doubles matches. Junior Shella Dargout (Rochester, N.Y.) and sophomore Vanja Lakic (Waterloo, Ont.) won their third consecutive match, beating Taylor Barvoets and Sugam Langer, 8-5, at No. 2. The senior duo of Prokopich and Jacquelyn Cary (Selkirk, N.Y.) downed Julia Lebedev and Arti Iyer, 8-5, to improve to 14-6 overall at No. 3.
Dargout ran her singles winning streak to 11 matches with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Iyer at No. 5 singles to put the Purple Eagles ahead, 2-0. Siena tied the match at 2-2 when freshman Molly Mathews (Pittsburgh, Pa.) lost 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 to Lebedev, and senior Jennifer Cremieux (Ajax, Ont.) fell 6-3, 6-2 to Barvoets at No. 2.
The Saints took the lead, 3-2, after Lakic lost at No. 1 to Sarah Mayer, but Cary tied the match again with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Molly Scullin at No. 5 and setting up Prokopich’s winning match.
