Women’s Tennis Beats Bona in Final Regular-Season Match

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University women’s tennis team (11-10) finished its regular season Tuesday with a 5-2 victory over Big Four rival St. Bonaventure University (1-8) at the St. Bonaventure Tennis Courts in Olean, N.Y.

The Purple Eagles won the doubles point, winning two of the three doubles matches. Junior Shella Dargout (Rochester, N.Y.) and sophomore Vanja Lakic (Waterloo, Ont.) defeated Anna Perevenzetseva and Yolande Callaghan, 8-3, at No. 2. The senior duo of Julianne Prokopich (Loretto, Ont.) and Jacquelyn Cary (Selkirk, N.Y.) beat Vanessa Close and Eileen Horgan, 8-0, at No. 3.

In singles, Lakic downed Callaghan, 6-3, 7-6 (5) at No. 1, Dargout beat Stephanie Fosnight, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3, Cary defeated Horgan, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 and junior Kim Roberts (Victoria, B.C.) downed Close, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6.

The Purple Eagles return to action this weekend as the No. 2 seed in the 25th Annual Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship at the United States Tennis Association Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
