NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University women’s tennis team (9-9, 6-0) remained undefeated in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play with a 4-3 win over Siena College (7-6, 4-2) Saturday afternoon at the Sportsplex.
The Purple Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the match, winning all three doubles matches. Senior Jennifer Cremieux (Ajax, Ont.) and freshman Molly Mathews (Pittsburgh, Pa.) beat Sarah Mayer and Karina Davis, 8-6, at No. 1. Junior Shella Dargout (Rochester, N.Y.) and sophomore Vanja Lakic (Waterloo, Ont.) downed Taylor Barvoets and Arti Iyer, 8-3, at No. 2. The senior duo of Julianne Prokopich (Loretto, Ont.) and Jacquelyn Cary (Selkirk, N.Y.) defeated Julia Lebedev and Sugam Langer, 8-5, at No. 3
In singles, Siena tied the match at 1-1 when Cremieux lost 7-5, 7-5 to Barvoets at No. 2. The Saints then took a 2-1 lead when Lakic lost 6-2, 6-2 to Mayer at No. 1.
Prokopich tied the match at 2-2 when she defeated Davis, 0-6, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3. Cary put the Purple Eagles up 3-2 when she defeated Langer, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6. Dargout gave Niagara win with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Iyer at No. 5.
Niagara returns to action Sunday when its hosts Marist College at 9 a.m. at the Sportsplex.
