FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Niagara University women’s tennis team (7-8, 4-0) remained undefeated in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action Saturday with a 5-2 victory over Fairfield University.
The Purple Eagles lost the doubles point, falling in two of the three matches. At No. 1, senior Jennifer Cremiex (Ajax, Ont.) and freshman Molly Mathews (Pittsburgh, Pa.) lost 8-6 to Gabriela Davila and Paulina Rys. Junior Shella Dargout (Rochester, N.Y./East) and sophomore Vanja Lakic (Waterloo, Ont.) dropped an 8-5 match at No. 2 to Alexis Accomando and Lauren Bonanno, but the No. 3 doubles team of seniors Jacquelyn Cary (Selkirk, N.Y.) and Julianne Prokopich (Loretto, Ont.) won 8-1 over Gretchen Amberg and Courtney Price.
Fairfield took a 2-0 lead when Rys defeated Lakic, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Cremiex registered Niagara’s first point of the match when she downed Bonanno, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2. Prokopich tied the match with a 7-6 (5), 6-1 win over Accomando at No. 3.
Dargout gave the Purple Eagles the 3-2 lead when she beat Price, 6-1, 6-3 and then Cary’s win at No. 6 gave Niagara the match. She defeated Taylor, 6-0, 6-0.
Niagara got its fifth win of the day from Mathews, who won 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 over Davila at No. 4.
The Purple Eagles return to action Sunday when they meet Saint Peter’s College at 11 a.m.
