NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Protecting its undefeated Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference record, the Niagara University women’s tennis team (6-8, 3-0) takes to the road to play Fairfield University and Saint Peter’s College this weekend. The Purple Eagles face the Stags at noon Saturday and the Peahens at 11 a.m. Sunday.
Niagara won its third consecutive league match March 24 with a 7-0 shutout of Rider University. The shutout was the third of the year for the team.
Junior Shella Dargout (Rochester, N.Y.) enters the weekend with a three-match winning streak and records of 10-8 overall and 3-0 in the conference. She sports a 5-1 record at No. 5 singles and is 3-3 at No. 4 and 0-1 at No. 3.
Senior Julianne Prokopich (Loretto, Ont.) also has a 3-0 MAAC record while freshman Molly Mathews (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and sophomore Victoria Tiso (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) sport 2-0 marks in the league.
In doubles, Dargout and sophomore Vanja Lakic (Waterloo, Ont.) are 2-0 vs. conference foes, 4-7 overall and 3-6 in dual matches. The senior duo of Prokopich and Jacquelyn Cary (Selkirk, N.Y.) are 5-4 at No. 3 doubles and 6-5 overall this season.
Fairfield is 6-4 on the season and 1-0 in the MAAC after defeating Saint Peter’s, 7-0, in its last outing.
Alexis Accomando is 11-3 overall and 6-3 in dual matches. Paulina Rys is 12-8 on the season with a 4-6 record at No. 1 singles. In doubles, Dana Postupack and Rys sport records of 9-5 overall and 5-2 at No. 1.
Saint Peter’s has lost its last two matches and is 4-13 overall and 0-4 in conference matches.
Vanessa Pangikas is 5-12 overall and 4-12 at No. 1 singles, and she teams with Angela Wiggs at No. 1 doubles.
Last year, Niagara defeated Fairfield, 6-1, and shut out Saint Peter’s, 7-0.
