NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – After battling through a tough non-conference schedule during spring break, the Niagara University men’s (4-7, 2-0) and women’s (5-8, 2-0) tennis teams return home and to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play when they host Rider University Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Sportsplex in Tonawanda.
The Purple Eagle men’s team went 1-2 on their last road trip to Colorado. They beat Northern Colorado, 6-1, but lost to Radford and Air Force, 7-0.
Junior Walter Garcia (Oaxaca, Mexico) leads Niagara with records of 14-7 overall and 7-3 at No. 1 singles. Garcia is also 2-0 in league play in the top spot.
Senior Erick Garcia (Oaxaca, Mexico) sports an 11-7 overall mark and 4-3 record in dual matches. He is 1-0 at No. 1, 2-2 at No. 2 and 1-1 at No. 3.
In doubles, Walter Garcia and classmate Alex Abji (Vancouver, B.C.) are 10-8 overall and 6-5 in dual matches. They are 2-1 at No. 2 and 4-4 at No. 3.
Niagara’s No. 1 doubles squad of senior Justin McConkey (Newmarket, Ont.) and sophomore Marc Dickinson (Saskatoon, Sask.) are 5-5 on the season.
Rider is 2-10 overall and 0-2 in league play. The Broncs, who have yet to play this spring, won their last outing, beating Wagner 6-1 on Oct. 26.
Luke Sproviero is 4-4 at No. 6 singles, and the No. 1 doubles team of Marc Ashed and Will Haight are 5-7 on the year.
The Purple Eagle women’s squad will be looking to end a four-match losing streak after going 0-3 on their last road trip. Niagara lost 7-0 to Denison and 5-2 to both Bucknell and Dayton in Hilton Head, S.C.
Despite the losses senior Jacquelyn Cary (Selkirk, N.Y.) and junior Shella Dargout (Rochester, N.Y.) enter the weekend with modest two-game winning streaks. For the season, Cary is 10-8 overall and 8-5 in dual matches. She sports 3-2 records at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
Dargout is 9-8 overall and 7-5 in dual matches, and sports a 5-1 at No. 5 singles.
In doubles, the senior duo of Cary and classmate Julianne Prokopich (Loretto, Ont.) are 6-6 overall and dual matches. They are 1-2 at No. 2 doubles and 5-4 at No. 3.
Rider is 5-7 overall and 1-2 in the MAAC this season. The Broncs won their last outing, 6-1, over Wagner on Oct. 26. Rider’s lone league win was a 5-2 victory over Saint Peter’s.
Kelly-Ann Chouinard is 8-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play at No. 5 singles. In doubles, the twins of Devin and Caitlin Crawbuck are 7-5 and 1-2 at No. 1.
