Men’s, Women’s Tennis on the Road This Weekend

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Coming off wins in their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference season openers, the Niagara University men’s (3-3, 1-0) and women’s (4-4, 1-0) tennis team take to the road this weekend. Their first stop is Riverdale, N.Y., where they take on league opponent Manhattan College at 2 p.m. Saturday. Sunday the squads are at Binghamton for 8 a.m. matches.

The Purple Eagle women’s team snapped its four-match losing streak with a 5-2 victory over Loyola College Feb. 25. Junior Shella Dargout (Rochester, N.Y.) won her matched and improved her records to 6-6 overall and 2-2 at No. 4 singles

The Lady Jaspers are 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the league after beating Rider, 5-2, in Lawrenceville Oct. 24.

The Bears are undefeated at 4-0. They beat Colgate, 5-2, on Feb. 10. Lya Kushnirovich sports a 10-3 overall record and 3-0 dual mark at No. 3 singles.

Last year, Niagara beat Manhattan, 5-2, for the third consecutive season, but lost to Binghamton, 6-1.

The Purple Eagle men’s squad also ended a losing streak and registered their third shutout of the season with a 7-0 win over Loyola.

Junior Walter Garcia (Oaxaca, Mexico) extended his winning streak to five matches and remained undefeated at No. 1 singles with a 5-0 record.

Classmate Alex Abji (Vancouver, B.C.) also has a modest two-match winning streak and stands at 8-5 overall and 3-0 at No. 5.

Manhattan is the defending MAAC champion and already has a 7-0 victory over Niagara this season. The Jaspers are 4-5 overall and have dropped their last three matches, including a 5-2 decision at Columbia on Feb. 16.

Binghamton enters the weekend with a 3-7 overall record after losing, 4-3, at St. Bonaventure Feb. 18. Faisal Mohamed sports an 18-8 overall record and 7-4 dual mark at No. 1 singles.

Last year, Niagara lost twice to the Jaspers, 5-2, during the regular season and 4-1 in the league tournament. Two years ago, Binghamton claimed a 6-1 home victory over the Purple Eagles.
