NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – With both teams looking to return to the win column, the Niagara University men’s (2-1) and women’s tennis (3-2) teams travel to Hamilton, N.Y., this weekend to take on Colgate University in Sanford Fieldhouse.
The Purple Eagle women’s squad opens the weekend with a 9 a.m. match Saturday. They look to rebound from two consecutive losses, the last a 7-0 shut out Feb. 11 from Buffalo.
Sophomore Vanja Lakic (Waterloo, Ont.) is 6-8 overall and 3-2 in dual matches and at No. 1 singles. Freshman Molly Mathews (Pittsburgh, Pa.), who sat out the UB match, is 5-5 overall and 2-0 at No. 3 singles.
Senior Jennifer Cremieux (Ajax, Ont.), who has retired in the last two matches, is still 4-3 overall and 3-2 in dual matches at No. 2 singles.
In doubles, Cremieux and Mathews are 3-2 in dual matches at No. 1 doubles and 4-5 overall.
Colgate enters the match 2-1 on the season after opening the season with 5-2 wins over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference teams Marist and Siena. Since then, the Red Raiders has lost at Binghamton, 5-2, on Feb. 10.
Elise Dorose sports records of 5-3 overall and 3-0 at No. 2 singles. Cameron Thaney is 4-2 overall and undefeated at 3-0 at No. 6 singles.
In doubles, Thaney and Samantha Inacker are 4-5 overall and 2-1 in dual matches at No. 2.
Last year, Niagara lost at Colgate, 6-1. The Purple Eagles last beat the Red Raiders in 2003-04, winning 4-3.
The Purple Eagle men’s squad, which has been idle since the start of the month, looks to snap a two-match losing streak when it meets Colgate at 9 a.m. Saturday. Niagara is coming off a heart-breaking 4-3 loss at Cleveland State Feb. 2.
Junior Walter Garcia (Oaxaca, Mexico) won his 10th single match of the season in the CSU match. He sports records of 10-4 overall, 3-0 in dual matches and 3-0 at No. 1 singles. Garcia has won six out of his last seven singles matches.
Senior Erick Garcia (Oaxaca, Mexico) could join his brother in the 10-win club as he enters the weekend with records of 9-4 overall, 2-0 in dual matches and 1-0 marks at No. 1 and No. 2 singles.
In doubles, senior Justin McConkey (Newmarket, Ont.) and sophomore Marc Dickinson (Saskatoon, Sask.) are 2-1 at No. 1. Walter Garcia and classmate Alex Abji (Vancouver, B.C.) are also 2-1 at No. 2.
Colgate will be looking for its first win of the season after starting the year 0-4. The Red Raiders lost their last match, 4-3, at Stony Brook on Feb. 11. They host Hofstra Saturday before taking on the Purple Eagles.
Chris Innes is 4-7 overall and 0-3 at No. 1 singles. He also teams with Marshall Wheeler at No. 1 doubles for records of 4-4 overall and 2-2 dual matches.
Last year, Niagara lost 5-2 at Colgate, extending the Red Raiders’ series winning streak to three matches.
