Men’s, Women’s Tennis Travel to Cleveland State

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University men’s (2-1) and women’s (3-0) tennis teams return to action this weekend when the Purple Eagle men’s team plays Cleveland State Friday at 6 p.m. and the women meet the Vikings at noon on Saturday.

The Niagara men’s team is coming off a heart-breaking loss at Duquesne Jan. 27. Tied 3-3 with one match left, the Purple Eagles lost a three-set match.

Junior Walter Garcia (Oaxaca, Mexico) is 9-4 overall and 2-0 at No. 1 singles this season. In his last 10 matches, he sports a 7-3 record.

Freshman Roman Silin (Niagara Falls, Ont.) is 2-0 at No. 3 singles while sophomore Marc Dickinson (Saskatoon, Sask.) is 3-0 in dual matches.

In doubles, Dickinson and senior Justin McConkey (Newmarket, Ont.) are 2-0 at No. 1 doubles.

The Viking men (4-1) are led by two freshmen and two sophomores. Freshmen Ryan Hamning is 14-5 playing mostly at No. 3 singles. Rookie Phil Orno, 12-5, switches between the first and second spots along with junior Brad Groleski (8-9).

Hamning and Orno also form the No. 1 doubles combo, going 11-2.

In last year’s match on Monteagle Ridge, Niagara prevailed 4-3 when junior Alex Abji (Vancouver, B.C.) pulled out a three-set match at No. 3.

The Niagara women’s tennis team remains undefeated at 3-0 after collecting its third consecutive shut out at Robert Morris Jan. 27.

Sophomore Vanja Lakic (Waterloo, Ont.) is 3-0 at No. 1 singles, senior Jennifer Cremieux (Ajax, Ont.) is also 3-0 at No. 2 singles.

The Purple Eagles’ No. 1 doubles team of Cremieux and freshman Molly Mathews (Pittsburgh, Pa.) are 3-0.

The Cleveland State women (1-4) are led by senior all-league performer Sarah Galon, who currently is 11-6 at No. 1 singles. Galon went 8-3 in the top doubles spot with fellow senior Morgan Ungerott but now teams with freshman Charlotte Gibbons.

Last year, Cleveland State shut out Niagara 7-0 on Monteagle Ridge.
