NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Sitting in first place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference standings, the Niagara University women’s tennis team (7-9, 4-0) concludes its conference regular season with three matches on the road this weekend. The Purple Eagles meet Rider University Friday at 1 p.m., Marist College Saturday at 2 p.m. and Siena College Sunday at 10 a.m.
Four Purple Eagles will be putting undefeated MAAC records on the line this weekend. Sophomore Kim Roberts (Victoria, B.C.) is 4-0 at No. 5 and No. 6 singles and has records of 7-11 overall and 7-7 dual matches.
Senior Danielle Grenier (Fort Erie, Ont.) is 3-0 vs. league foes and has won her last three matches since playing singles again. Sophomore Shella Dargout (Rochester, N.Y.) is also 3-0 in league action, playing No. 4 and No. 5 singles.
Freshman Victoria Tiso (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) is 2-0 with wins over Saint Peter’s and Manhattan.
The No. 2 doubles team of junior Jacquelyn Cary (Selkirk, N.Y.) and Dargout are 3-0 in the MAAC, 6-5 in dual matches, and have won their last four matches.
Freshman duo Vanja Lakic (Waterloo, Ont.) and Tiso are 4-2 in dual matches and are 2-0 in the league.
Rider is 10-4 overall and 2-2 in the MAAC. It defeated Delaware State, 6-1 in its last outing last week.
Tanya Cota is 0-4 at No. 1 singles, and the No. 1 doubles team of Devin Crawbuck and Caitlin Crawbuck are 1-3 vs. MAAC foes.
Marist won its second consecutive match with a 5-2 win over Loyola on April 2 to improve to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the league. In addition to the Greyhounds, the Red Foxes have beaten Rider (6-1). The Red Foxes concluded their MAAC schedule vs. Saint Peter’s, Manhattan, Niagara and Fairfield.
Inge Le-Grange is 2-1 at No. 1 singles for Marist, and teams with Yana Tikhonko for a 2-0 record at No. 1 doubles and a 1-0 mark at No. 2.
Siena is 10-5 overall, 5-0 in the MAAC and riding a four-match winning streak. It defeated Manhattan in its last outing, 7-0. The Saints’ other league wins were over Rider (7-0), Fairfield (5-0), Loyola (7-0) and Saint Peter’s (7-0). They conclude the regular season vs. Niagara and Marist.
Sarah Mayer is 14-1 overall and 4-0 in league matches at No.1 singles. She and Taylor Barvoets are 6-5 overall and 3-0 in conference at No. 1 doubles.
Last year Niagara defeated Rider, 6-1, lost to Marist, 6-1, and beat Siena, 7-0, during the regular season. The Purple Eagles also defeated the Broncs, 4-1, and the Red Foxes, 4-2, in the MAAC Tournament.
