NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – After finishing the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season with a 4-2 record, the Niagara University women’s tennis team earned the No. 3 seed in the 24th annual MAAC Tennis Tournament Friday through Sunday. The defending MAAC Champions begin play in the opening round of the tournament against sixth-seeded Rider University at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the United States Tennis Association Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
If Niagara advances to the semifinals, it will play the winner of second-seeded Siena College and seventh-seed Manhattan College at 2 p.m. Saturday. The championship match is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday.
After being the No. 2 seed and winning their second MAAC title in 2005, the Purple Eagles are seeded behind Marist College and Siena whom they lost to in the MAAC regular season.
The tournament is being held at the USTA Tennis Center, which includes 18 courts. The MAAC Championship will be held on six courts, excluding the stadium courts. Admission to the tournament is free and seating capacity is over 5,000.
Niagara has finished in the top 5 in five of the last seven tournaments. Last year, Niagara defeated Saint Peter’s in the first round (6-1), Rider in the semifinals (4-1), but upset the No. 1 seed Marist, 4-2, in the championship match.
Rider enters the tournament with a 2-4 MAAC record. The Purple Eagles and the Broncs did not meet in the regular season due to inclement weather.
