Women’s Tennis Remain Undefeated in the MAAC


Junior Julianne Prokopich won two matches in Niagara's 6-1 win Saturday.

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University women’s tennis team (5-9) remained undefeated in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference at 3-0 with a 6-1 victory over Fairfield University Saturday at the Sportsplex in North Tonawanda.

The Purple Eagles swept the doubles point for the fourth time this season to take a 1-0 lead in the match. At No. 1 doubles, senior Danielle Grenier (Fort Erie, Ont.) and junior Julianne Prokopich (Loretto, Ont.) defeated Alexis Accomando and Megan Stauffer, 9-7. Junior Jacquelyn Cary (Selkirk, N.Y.) and sophomore Shella Dargout (Rochester, N.Y.) beat Lauren Bonanno and Tiffany Marsocci, 8-3, at No. 2. At No. 3 doubles, freshmen Vanja Lakic (Waterloo, Ont.) and Victoria Tiso (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) beat Christina Chacharone and Gabriella Davila, 8-6.

Niagara took a 3-0 lead when Lakic and Prokopich won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, and Grenier secured the win with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles. Dargout and sophomore Kim Roberts (Victoria, B.C.) also won at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.

The Purple Eagles return to action Saturday when they host Manhattan College at 11 a.m.
