Women’s Tennis Faces Tough Competition This Weekend

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University women’s tennis team will face two of its toughest opponents this weekend when it hosts Binghamton University Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Sportsplex in North Tonawanda, and then the University at Buffalo at 1 p.m. at the Village Glenn in Amherst.

The Purple Eagles enter the match with a 4-4 overall record. In their last outing at Loyola, the Purple Eagles beat the Greyhounds, 4-2.

Junior Julianne Prokopich (Loretto, Ont.) is 5-4 in overall matches and 5-1 in dual matches. She is 0-1 at No. 2, 3-0 at No. 3 and 2-0 at No. 4.

In doubles, Prokopich and partner Danielle Greiner (Ft. Erie, Ont.) are 6-4 overall and 4-3 in dual matches at No. 1. At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Kim Roberts (Victoria, B.C.) and freshman Vanja Lakic (Waterloo, Ont.) are also 6-4 overall and 4-3 in dual matches.

Binghamton brings 3-3 record into the Saturday’s match, but have won it last two matches. On Feb. 25, the Bears beat St. Bonaventure, 6-1.

Zeynep Altinay, the 2005 America East Player of the Year, is 14-6 overall and 3-2 in dual matches at No. 1 singles. Jelena Koprivica and Jenn Naegeli sport a 2-4 record at No. 1 doubles.

Buffalo is 5-1 on the season and sport a two-match winning streak after shutting out Colgate, 7-0, and Duquesne, 7-0, Feb. 11 and Feb. 25, respectively.

Miglena Nenova is 9-4 overall and 3-1 at No. 1 singles. In doubles, Andreea Novaceanu and Tina Jacob are 8-1 overall and 2-1 in dual matches.
