Tennis Teams Travel to Colgate

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University men’s and women’s tennis teams will both take on Patriot League foe Colgate University this weekend. The women’s team plays at 2 p.m. Saturday and the men at 10 a.m. Sunday. Both matches will be played in Sanford Field House.

The Purple Eagle women’s team sports a 3-3 overall record after defeating Saint Peter’s, 7-0, in their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match of the season this past weekend.

Junior Julianne Prokopich (Loretto, Ont.) enters the match with a four-match winning streak. She is 2-0 at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, and sports records of 4-3 overall and 4-0 in dual matches.

Freshman Victoria Tiso (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) is 3-2 in dual matches and 4-5 overall this season. She is 1-0 at No. 4 and No. 5 singles and 1-2 at No. 6.

In doubles, the duos of senior Danielle Greiner (Ft. Erie, Ont.) and Prokopich and sophomore Kim Roberts (Victoria, B.C.) and freshman Vanja Lakic (Waterloo, Ont.) are 6-3 overall and 4-2 in dual matches.

Colgate is 3-2 on the season and enters the match on a two-match losing streak after being shut out by the University at Buffalo and Syracuse this past weekend.

Jackie Couture is 4-4 overall and 2-2 in dual matches at No. 1 singles and teams with Alex Seaton at No. 1 doubles. The pair are 5-3 overall and 4-1 in dual matches.

In last year’s match, the Red Raiders defeated Niagara, 6-1, in Hamilton.

The Niagara men’s team puts its undefeated 4-0 record on the line Sunday. The Purple Eagles won their first league match of the year last weekend, defeating Saint Peter’s, 7-0.

Three Purple Eagles sport three-match winning streaks. Junior Justin McConkey (Newmarket, Ont.) is 7-4 overall and 3-0 in dual matches, sophomore Walter Garcia (Oaxaca, Mexico) is 9-5 overall and 4-0 in dual matches and classmate Alex Abji (Vancouver, B.C.) is 4-4 overall and 3-1 in dual play.

Freshman Dawson Peare (Gromley, Ont.) hasn’t lost a set in his last two matches and is 3-4 overall and 3-1 in dual matches.

In doubles overall, Niagara sports 3-1 records in dual matches at all three positions. Garcia and Abji are 3-0 overall and have dual records of 1-0 at No. 1 and 2-0 at No. 2.

Colgate is 1-1 on the year after defeating Swarthmore, 7-2 on Feb. 11. Chris Innes looks to snap a six-match losing streak at No. 1 singles. He is 3-11 overall and 0-2 in dual matches.

In doubles, Innes and Martin MacIntyre are 3-4 overall and 1-1 in dual matches at No. 1. Tyler Deck and Matt McCormick sport records of 5-3 and 1-1 at No. 3 doubles.

In last year’s match, the Red Raiders defeated Niagara, 6-1, in Hamilton.
