Freshman Shella Dargout

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Niagara University women’s tennis team avenged its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament loss from last year with a 6-1 victory over Fairfield University late Saturday night.

With the win, the Purple Eagles improve to 8-7 overall and 4-0 in the league. They currently sport a 27-0 MAAC regular-season record that dates to the 2001 season.

Niagara won its 10th doubles point of the season when senior Mariam Al-Shikarchy and junior Danielle Greiner defeated Christina Chacharone and Diana Webb, 8-3, at No. 1. The sophomore duo of Jacquelyn Cary and Julianne Prokopich beat Megan Stauffer and Alexis Accomando, 8-2, at No. 2. Senior Kendra Daigler and freshman Shella Dargout won at No. 3, 8-5, over Tiffany Marsocci and Cristin Zaccareo.

In singles. Al-Shikarchy remained undefeated in dual play with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Webb at No. 1. At. No. 2, Greiner beat Stauffer, 6-0, 6-0.

Cary and Prokopich were also winners at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Cary bested Accomando, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (8) and Prokopich won 6-1, 6-3. Dargout defeated Michelle Geller at No. 6, 6-1, 6-0.

Niagara returns to action next weekend when it hosts Siena at 9 a.m. Saturday and Marist at 9 a.m. Sunday.
