JERSEY CITY, N.J. – For the third consecutive year the Niagara University women’s tennis team (14-8) will be playing for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Purple Eagles defeated Rider University, 4-1, Saturday in the semifinals. They will play top-seeded Marist College at 11 a.m. Sunday.
Niagara won the first point of the match when it was victorious at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Senior Mariam Al-Shikarchy and junior Danielle Greiner defeated Amanda Doetsch and Devin Crawback, 8-5, at the top spot. The sophomore duo of Jacquelyn Cary and Julianne Prokopich beat Caitlin Crawback and Dana Previti, 8-0.
In singles, Al-Shikarchy ran her winning streak to 11 straight with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Doetsch at No. 1. Greiner knocked off Devin Crawback at No. 2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 and Cary picked up the match-winning point with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Previti at No. 4.
In the regular-season meeting on April 10, the Purple Eagles lost to Marist, 6-1.
Niagara earned the program’s first trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2003.
