Women’s Tennis Remains Undefeated in MAAC Play

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Niagara University women’s tennis team won its second Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match of the season and snapped a two-match losing streak with a 7-0 shutout of Saint Peter’s College Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Purple Eagles are 5-6 overall and 2-0 in league.

Niagara swept the doubles point for the seventh time in 11 matches, winning at all three spots. At No. 1, senior Mariam Al-Shikarchy (Fonthill, Ont.) and junior Danielle Greiner (Ft. Erie, Ont.) beat Marija Djukic and Kristy Booner, 8-1. The sophomore duo of Jacquelyn Cary (Selkirk, N.Y.) and Julianne Prokopich (Loretto, Ont.) defeated Angela Wiggs and Sabrine Hassouna, 8-0. At No. 3 doubles, senior Kendra Daiger (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and freshman Shella Dargout (Rochester, N.Y.) beat Jing Cheung and Melisa Aro, 8-1.

In singles, Al-Shikarchy won her 12th match at No. 1 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Djukic. Greiner evened her overall No. 2 record to 4-4 with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Booner. At No. 3, Daigler won her fifth match of the season, besting Wiggs, 6-0, 6-0.

Cary improved to 7-6 on the season with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Hassouna at No. 4. At No. 5, Prokopich defeated Cheung, 6-1, 6-0, for her seventh win this season. Dargout defeated Aro, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 to improve ot 8-9 overall.

Niagara returns to action Sunday when it meets Manhattan at 10:30 a.m.
