ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The Niagara University women’s tennis team won its third match in its last four outings with a 6-1 victory over Big Four rival St. Bonaventure Wednesday afternoon at the SBU Fitness Center. The victory improves the Purple Eagles to 7-7 on the season and drops the Bonnies to 0-14.
Niagara had four double winners for the match. Senior Mariam Al-Shikarchy and junior Danielle Greiner won at No. 1 doubles, beating Ana Delgado and Anna Perevenzetseva, 8-2. Al-Shikarchy improved to 10-3 in dual matches with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Perevenzetseva at No. 1 singles. Greiner won her sixth dual match of the season at No. 2 singles with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Stephanie Fosnight.
The sophomore duo of Jacquelyn Cary and Julianne Prokopich won 10th overall match of the year with an 8-5 victory over Fosnight and Jasmine Jaysingh at No. 2 doubles. Cary improved to 7-6 at No. 4 singles with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Jaysingh. Prokopich defeated Sarah Costello, 6-0, 6-1 for her eighth dual match win at No. 5 singles.
Niagara returns to action this weekend when it meets Fairfield University Saturday at noon in a rematch of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title match. The Purple Eagles then play at Quinnipiac on Sunday at 9 a.m.
