Women’s Tennis Travels to Michigan

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University women’s tennis team (2-0) puts its modest two-match winning streak on the line when it travels to Michigan to play Oakland University and Detroit this weekend. The Purple Eagles meet the Grizzlies Saturday at 2 p.m. at Lifetime Fitness and the Titans Sunday Schoolcraft College at noon.

Niagara won its first two dual matches of the season when they beat Clarion University, 6-1, and shut out St. Francis (Pa.), 7-0, last weekend.

Sophomores Shella Dargout (Rochester, N.Y.) and Kim Roberts (Victoria, B.C.) along with freshmen Vanja Lakic (Waterloo, Ont.) and Victoria Tiso (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) all sport 2-0 records in dual matches. Lakic is also 5-1 overall this season.

In doubles, the Purple Eagles’ No. 1 and No. 2 teams are undefeated this year. Senior Danielle Grenier (Fort Erie, Ont.) and junior Julianne Prokopich (Loretto, Ont.) are 3-0 overall and 2-0 in dual matches at No. 1 doubles, while Roberts and Lakic are 4-0 overall and 2-0 in dual matches at No. 2.

Oakland enters the weekend with a 3-1 record, but in its last outing dropped a close 4-3 decision at Detroit on Sept. 28.

The Grizzlies are led by junior Jessica Erickson who is 3-0 on the season, winning once at No. 5 singles and twice at No. 6 singles. Senior Lisa Pellafone is 2-1 with a win and loss at No. 3 and a victory at No. 4. In doubles, the freshman duo of Michelle Maxfield and Amanda Scheer at 2-1 at No. 1 and the junior pair of Angela Trecola and Lauren Sanchez-Murphy are 2-1 at No. 3.

Detroit stands at 2-0 on the season after shutting out St. Francis (Pa.) and beating Oakland.

The Titans are led by freshman Annie Moore and sophomore Amy Inman. Moore is 9-2 overall at No. 1 singles and Inman is 8-4 at No. 3. In doubles, Moore and sophomore Stephanie Hill are 1-0 at No. 1.

Last season, Niagara lost to Detroit at home, 5-2.
