NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Junior Mariam Al-Shikarchy came back from a set down to record Niagara University’s (11-0, 5-0) fourth point in the Purple Eagles’ 4-3 victory over Fairfield University (12-4, 3-1) Saturday.
Al-Shikarchy lost the first set 6-7 to Taylor Barvoets, but came back with 6-2, 6-3 sets for her 13th overall win at No. 2.
Fairfield took the early lead winning the doubles point and it marked the first time this season Niagara lost the doubles point. Al-Shikarchy and sophomore Danielle Griener defeated Barvoets and Diane Webb at No. 1, 8-3, to remain undefeated in dual action. At No. 2, Fairfield’s Erin Reeves and Andrea Suriano defeated senior Milena Matijevic and freshman Aditi Krishman, 8-5. The Purple Eagle freshman duo of Jacquelyn Cary and Julianne Prokopich fell to Megan Stauffer and Ann Mullowney, 8-6.
In singles, Niagara continued its slow start, losing two of the first three matches. Greiner, who was sidelined for the fall season with an ankle injury, retired her match at No. 3 to Suriano, 6-0, 6-1. Krishman gave the Purple Eagles their first point of the day with a 6-2, 7-6 (3) win at No. 4 over Reeves. Senior Kendra Daigler lost at No. 4, 6-2, 6-4 to Stauffer to leave Niagara trailing 3-1 in the match.
Matijevic began the Purple Eagles’ comeback by beating Webb, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1. Cary tied the match at 3-3 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Tiffany Marsocci at No. 6. Al-Shikarchy then won the match with her three-set victory.
