Niagara Women’s Tennis Team Advances to MAAC Semifinals


Freshman Aditi Krishnan was a double winner in Niagara's first round win in the MAAC Tennis Championship.

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Niagara University women’s tennis team continued its unbeaten streak with a 7-0 shut out of Saint Peter’s Friday in the first round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Championship at USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.

With the shutout win, the Purple Eagles run their record to 14-0 and the shutout was their fifth of the season.

Niagara opened the match with a sweep of the double matches for the 13th time this season. Junior Mariam Al-Shikarchy (Fonthill, Ont.) and sophomore Danielle Greiner (Ft. Erie, Ont.) won their 12th dual match of the season and 13th overall with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Murija Dkujic and Angela Higgs.

Senior Milena Matijevic (Niagara Falls, Ont.) and freshman Aditi Krishnan (Markham, Ont.) beat Priscilla Davis and Nita Atanasova at No. 2 doubles, 8-0. The pair is now 9-2 in dual matches and 10-3 overall.

The freshman duo of Jacquelyn Cary (Selkirk, N.Y.) and Julianne Prokopich (Loretto, Ont.) improved to 8-4 overall with an 8-0 victory over Joelle Velasco and Sabrina Housanna at No. 3.

Niagara swept the singles matches for the fifth time this season. Matijevic won her 21st match of the season with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Dkujic. At No. 2, Al-Shikarchy beat Higgs, 6-1, 6-2. Krishnan won her 15th match of the year with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Davies at No. 3.

Senior Kendra Daigler (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) won her second-straight match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Atanasova at No. 4. Cary improved to 10-7 overall this season with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 5 over Housanna. Prokopich remained undefeated at No. 6 with a 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Velasco.

The Purple Eagles play the winner of fourth-seeded Loyola and fifth-seeded Siena in the semifinals at 11 a.m. Saturday.
