Niagara Wins Battle of the Unbeatens in Women’s Tennis


Senior Milena Matijevic reached a milestone with her 100th career singles win in a victory over Marist Saturday.

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Niagara University women’s tennis team (12-0, 6-0) took over sole possession of first place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with a nail-biting 4-3 win at Marist College (10-1, 5-1) Saturday.

Freshman Jacquelyn Cary (Selkirk, N.Y.) won a three-set match over Courtney McGeever, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, at No. 6 to perserve the Purple Eagles’ perfect season.

Trailing 3-2 in the match, senior Milena Matijevic (Niagara Falls, Ont.) tied the match and reached a milestone with her 100th career singles win. She beat Yana Tikhonko, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 and set up Cary’s game-winning match.

Niagara jumped out to a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point for the 11th time this season. Junior Mariam Al-Shikarchy (Fonthill, Ont.) and sophomore Danielle Greiner (Ft. Erie, Ont.) beat Diane Perachio and Annabel Hicks, 8-3 at No. 1. At No. 2, Matijevic and freshman Aditi Krishnan (Markham, Ont.) lost to Tikhonko and Yana Krugly, 8-3. Winning the doubles point for the Purple Eagles was Cary and fellow rookie Julianne Prokopich (Loretto, Ont.) with an 8-4 win at No. 3.

Al-Shikarchy remained undefeated in MAAC play with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Perachio at No. 2. Marist then ran off three-straight wins at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 to take the lead. Hicks beat Greiner, 6-3, 6-5 retire, Krugly downed Krishnan, 6-4, 6-4, and Megan Gureck beat senior Kendra Daigler (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda), 6-4, 6-3.

Niagara plays its final regular-season match of the season Sunday and looks to record its second-straight undefeated MAAC record when it travels to Loudonville, N.Y., to take on Siena College (8-5, 2-3) at noon.
