Niagara Tennis Teams Make Final Regular-Season Trip


Senior Milena Matijevic will be playing for her 100th career singles win Saturday.

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University men’s and women’s tennis teams play their final Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matches of the season this weekend when they travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., to take on Marist Saturday and then to Loudonville, N.Y., to face Siena Sunday. Play begins at 2 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday.

The women’s squad enters the matches with an 11-0 overall record and 5-0 MAAC mark. The Purple Eagles will be attempting to win their second-straight MAAC title. Standing in their way is Marist, which enters the match with a 5-0 league record after beating Fairfield, 5-2, Wednesday. Siena is 2-2 in the conference and plays at Manhattan Friday and hosts Fairfield Saturday. Niagara has been idle for two weeks after beating Fairfield, 4-3, at the Sportsplex April 3.

The Purple Eagles have three student-athletes sporting undefeated records in MAAC action. Junior Mariam Al-Shikarchy is 5-0 at No. 2, freshman Aditi Krishnan is 5-0 at No. 4 and rookie Jacquelyn Cary is 5-0 at No. 6.

Senior Milena Matijevic is 4-1 in league play and will be playing for a milestone win this weekend. The reigning MAAC Player of the Year has a 99-9 career singles record and will be playing for her 100th victory. Matijevic has an 18-2 overall mark this season.

In last year’s matches, Niagara defeated Marist 6-1 in home and handed Siena a 5-2 loss in the Purple Eagles’ final home game. Niagara then downed the Red Foxes 4-0 in the MAAC Tournament.

The Niagara men’s squad will also be looking to gain some ground this weekend. The Purple Eagles are in third place in the MAAC with a 4-1 record. They trail first place Manhattan (5-0) and second place Marist (5-1). Niagara beat Fairfield in its last outing, 5-2, and snapped a three-match losing streak.

Marist enters the match 9-1 in its last 10 outings. The Red Foxes lost their first league dual match in five years falling to Manhattan, 5-2, Tuesday. Siena sits one match back of Niagara at 3-1. The Saints are on a two-match winning streak and play Manhattan Friday and Fairfield Saturday.

The Purple Eagles have three student-athletes with only one loss. Junior Jonathan Bozanich is 4-1 at No. 1, junior Erick Garcia 4-1 at No. 2 and senior Kris Hrisovulos is 3-1 at No. 4 and No. 6.

In doubles, the duo of senior Jason Ramos and Garcia will be protecting a 4-0 league record at No. 1. Niagara has used seven other pairs at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles throughout the season.

In last year’s matches, Niagara beat Siena, 7-0, but lost to eventual MAAC Champion Marist, 6-1, at the Niagara Tennis Facility.
