NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University women’s tennis team (8-0) won its eighth-straight match of the season when it defeated Cleveland State (3-7), 7-0, late Friday at the Sportsplex in Tonawanda, N.Y.
The Purple Eagles won the doubles point for the eighth consecutive match by sweeping all three doubles matches. Junior Mariam Al-Shikarchy and sophomore Danielle Greiner won their seventh dual match and eighth overall match of the season with an 8-5 win over Sarah Galon and Morgan Ungerott. At No. 2, senior Kendra Daigler and freshman Aditi Krishnan beat Paulina Reyes and Marcella Capozziella 8-6 to improve to 2-0 overall. The freshman duo of Jacquelyn Cary and Julianne Prokopich moved to 4-2 overall with an 8-4 victory over Rebekah Bicksler and Amanda Cerny.
In singles, Niagara swept all six matches for just the second time this season.
Senior Milena Matijevic improved to 15-2 overall and 6-1 in dual matches with a 6-1, 6-7, 7-5 win over Galon at No. 1. Al-Shikarchy remained undefeated in dual matches with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ungerott at No. 2. Greiner also remained undefeated with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Reyes at No. 3.
Krishnan won her 10th overall match of the season with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Bicksler at No. 4. Daigler snapped a three-match losing streak with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Capozziella at No. 5. She now stands at 3-7 overall. At No. 6, Cary also got back on the winning track beating Cerny, 6-1, 6-1.
The Purple Eagles return to action Sunday when they host MAAC foe Saint Peter’s at 8 a.m. at the Sportsplex.
