Purple Eagle Women’s Tennis Team Wins First MAAC Match


Sophomore Jacquelyn Cary won twice Saturday vs. Rider.

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University women’s tennis team (2-3, 1-0) won its second-straight match of the season and its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference outing with a 6-1 victory over Rider (3-3, 0-3) Saturday at Sportsplex.

The Purple Eagles swept the doubles point, winning all three matches. Senior Mariam Al-Shikarchy and junior Danielle Griener defeated Amanda Doetsch and Devin Crawbuck, 8-4, at No. 1. At No. 2, the Niagara sophomore due of Jacquelyn Cary and Julianne Prokopich beat Caitlin Crawbuck and Dana Previti, 8-1. Niagara senior Kendra Daigler and freshman Shella Dargout won at No. 3, beating Logan Kapinus and Carolina Duval, 8-3.

In singles, Al-Shikarchy remained undefeated in dual matches with a 6-2, retire win over Doetsch at No. 1. Greiner defeated Duval at No. 2, 6-0, 6-1, but Daigler lost in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1, at No. 3.

Cary beat Caitlin Crawbuck at No. 4, 7-5, 5-3 retire, Prokopich downed Kapinus, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 5 and Dargout defeated Previti, 8-3.

Niagara returns to action Monday when it travels to Cleveland, Ohio, to play at Cleveland State.
