Women’s Tennis Team Extends Streak to Three Matches


Freshman Shella Dargout won at No. 6 singles to help Niagara defeat Cleveland State Monday.

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – After a rocky start to the season, the Niagara University women’s tennis team (3-3) won its third consecutive match with a 4-3 victory over Cleveland State (2-2) Monday at Malaga Tennis Center.

Freshman Shella Dargout pulled the match out for the Purple Eagles. At No. 6 singles, Dargout won the first set 6-3 and then found herself in a 5-5 tie in the second set. She won the next two points and salvaged the win for Niagara.

After winning its last two doubles point, the Purple Eagles dropped the point Monday. Senior Mariam Al-Shikarchy and junior Danielle Greiner remained undefeated at No. 1 doubles with an 8-5 win over Sarah Galon and Morgan Ungerott. The sophomore duo of Jacquelyn Cary and Julianne Prokopich took their first dual match loss when Jenn Myers and Christine Vogelgesang won, 8-1, at No. 2. Dargout and senior Kendra Daigler dropped their match at No. 3, 8-5, to Lindsay Sellers and Marcella Capozziello.

Down 1-0, Al-Shikarchy got Niagara on the scoreboard, beating Galon, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, at No. 1. She is now 8-1 on the season, including 6-0 in dual matches.

Greiner gave the Purple Eagles the lead, 2-1, when she defeated Myers, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2. Cleveland State tied the match when Daigler dropped a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, to Ungerott.

Niagara took the lead when Cary won 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4 over Rebekah Bicksler. The Vikings tied the match at 3-3 when Sellers defeated Prokopich, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5.
