NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University women’s tennis team (2-3) makes its third road trip for a dual match this season when it travels to Cleveland, Ohio, to play Cleveland State (2-1) at 1 p.m. Monday at Malaga Tennis Center.
The Purple Eagles enter the match on a two-match winning streak after beating Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe Marist, 6-1, Oct. 9 to pick up their first league win.
In Niagara’s and Cleveland State’s 2003 match, Niagara shutout Cleveland State on its home court, 7-0, Feb. 27.
Senior Mariam Al-Shikarchy continues to lead the Purple Eagles. She sports a 7-1 overall record and a 5-0 mark in dual matches at No. 1. She also teams with junior Danielle Greiner at No. 1 doubles. The pair is undefeated at 4-0 overall and 3-0 in dual matches.
The No. 2 doubles team of sophomores Jacquelyn Cary and Julianne Prokopich also looks to remain undefeated in dual action. They enter the match with a 3-0 dual record and 4-2 overall mark.
Cleveland State begins a two-match homestand when it hosts Niagara. The Vikings have been off since two players competed in the Cissie Leary Invitational on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania at the end of September. In the last dual match, Cleveland State lost 6-1 to Buffalo on Sept. 19.
Sophomore Sarah Galon is 3-3 overall and 2-1 in dual matches at No. 1. Both Galon and Al-Shikarchy beat their common opponent, Lesley Wenzel of St. Francis (Pa.), 6-1, 6-1.
Also sporting winning overall records for the Vikings are sophomore Morgan Ungerott and freshman Christine Vogelgesang. The duo are 2-1 on the season and play No. 3 and No. 5/6, respectively, for Cleveland State.
